Teacher day and Ganesh day!
Oggi è stata una giornata di festa e gran divertimento a Pushkar! Inizia la festività di Ganesh, per le strade suonano i musicisti e viene portata in giro la statua del dio.
Teacher day and Ganesh day! Today has been a day of fun and celebration in Pushkar! It is the beginning of the festivities in honor of Ganesh and in the streets people play music and the statue of the god is brought around.
Ma non è solo un’occasione per divertirsi, numerosi fedeli si recano al tempio e al lago sacro dove questa mattina anche io ho avuto il piacere di fare la puja con Deepu.
But it is not only an excuse to have fun, many believers go to the temple or to the sacred lake where this morning I also had the pleasure of doing puja with Deepu.
E’ sempre una bella esperienza che mette serenità anche grazie all’atmosfera del lago dove molte persone sono intente a fare la puja, a pregare o a bagnarsi nelle acque sacre. Oggi al posto delle normali lezioni, a scuola c’è stata una cerimonia proprio per festeggiare queste due festività. Le ragazze dell’ottava classe, le più grandi, come da tradizione erano bellissime vestite a loro piacimento alcune con il sari mentre altre con i jeans invece della divisa e hanno diretto loro tutto l’evento.
It is always a good experience that gives peace also thanks to the atmosphere of the lake where many people are doing puja, praying or bathing in the sacred lake. Today instead of the normal classes there was a ceremony to celebrate these two festivities. The girls from eight class, the oldest in our school, as a tradition were stunningly dressed not in their uniform but as they wanted, some wore sari and others jeans and they were the ones to direct everything.
E’ stato molto divertente vedere i giochi che avevano organizzato per i professori, li chiamavano ad uno ad uno ad estrarre da un piatto un foglio di carta dove era scritta un’azione da fare in 20 secondi. C’è chi ha cantato chi ha ballato, chi ha recitato filastrocche e chi ha persino dovuto indossare un sari o mettere lo smalto alle unghie!
It was very fun to see the games they organized for the professors, they would call them one by one, make them pick a card that had written on it the activity they would have to perform for 20 seconds. One had to sing, one to dance, one to recite something and one even had to wear a sari or paint a girl’s nails!
Tutto questo provocava grandi risate e applausi da tutte le bimbe e dai professori stessi, alcuni dei quali al loro turno erano anche molto imbarazzati. C’era una bellissima atmosfera di festa e di gratitudine verso gli insegnanti che sono per noi veramente un dono prezioso. Poi sono passati al gioco della sedia, mi veniva da ridere al pensiero di quante volte ci ho giocato io alle feste di compleanno o anche i miei genitori prima di me e ancora una volta ho visto come le distanze e le differenze di cultura si accorciano in un attimo. I professori felici, con il tifo delle loro classi, hanno giocato agguerriti fino all’ultima sedia e c’è stato pure qualche scivolone!!!
All of this generated great laughter and clapping in the girls and the professors also, some of them when it was their turn were very embarrassed. There was an amazing celebration atmosphere and gratitude toward the teachers that really are a precious gift for us. After the played the game with the chair, for who doesn’t know it the participants have to run around a group of chairs and sit down when the music stops, but at every round someone is eliminated because there is one chair less than the contestants. It made me laugh to think of how many times growing up I played the same game at parties and also my parents before me, once again I saw how distance and cultural differences disappear in a second. The professors were very excited and with the cheering of their classes they played till the end and there were also some slips!!
Poi ho potuto giocare un po’ io con le bimbe e abbiamo fatto un gioco che mi ricorda molto la campana dove si salta su un piede solo da un quadrato all’altro. Prima di salutarci le ragazze dell’ottava classe mi hanno chiesto di fotografarle e anche di farsi foto con me e se gliele potevo stampare. E’ un gesto così piccolo ma che per loro vale tantissimo e vederle tutte emozionate, vestite e truccate a festa è davvero qualcosa di speciale!
After I played with the girls and we played a game that reminds me of hopscotch where you have to jump on one foot from a square to another. Before leaving the girls for the eight class asked me to take pictures of them and of them with me and to print them out. It’s such a small gesture but it means so much to them and seeing them so excited, dressed and with make up on for the party is really something!
